Taste of Burlington crowns “Best Taste” &“People’s Choice” at the Winter Launch
Burlington restaurateurs are proud to announce “A Taste of Burlington” will be running again this winter from February 16-March 6. To kick things off and provide diners an opportunity to experience a taste of what to expect, the Taste of Burlington held our launch event at the Burlington Performing Arts Centre last night.
Over 300 guests and media had an opportunity to meet many of our participating restaurateurs at their interactive food stations and try amazing cuisine as well our friends from Cameron’s Brewing Co. sampled their award winning craft beers and Lakehouse Coffee House kept the crowd caffeinated with their amazing fair-trade coffee.
We had so much fun with our friendly competition between the restaurants at our previous launch we decided to continue the “Best Taste” and “People’s Choice” awards. All guests were given the opportunity to vote for their favourite restaurant based on the cuisine they were serving. The popular vote would be crowned “People’s Choice”. The competition was fierce and the restaurants really stepped it up again wowing everyone in attendance. With the best of the best being dished out we are not surprised that for the first time ever we had a tie for “People’s Choice”. Congratulations to defending champions West Plains Bistro who along with Stone House Restaurant captured the title. West Plains Bistro served up their curried cauliflower soup with a dried mango, raisin and almond garnish while Stone House went with a perfectly cooked beer braised short rib with truffled turnip puree. Coming in a close second was newcomer Test Kitchen with their tuna canapés. It was a tight race and we’d like to congratulate all the Chefs on their outstanding cuisine.
The talents of some local celebrities where tapped to judge the “Best Taste”. We challenged Agatha Podgorski (Ontario Culinary Tourism Alliance), Andrew Gerrior & Colleen Rusholme (95.3 Fresh FM), and Jaclyn Colville (CHCH TV) to sample the fare of the 25 restaurants and score them based on taste, creativity and presentation. In this category the combined judge’s scores were used to determine the winner and it seems our judges had a taste for the sweeter side of things, Chef Will Edsell of the Queen’s Head Pub was the winner of the title of “Best Taste” with his house made sweet potato donuts filled with Ontario maple cream and rolled in pralines. Only a quarter point separated the two runner ups with honourable mentions going to Stone House for their beer braised short rib and Spencer’s at the Waterfront for their icewine marshmallow s ‘mores made with an icewine marshmallow, chocolate ganache and quinoa graham cracker.

We went green! In partnership with Burlington Green we greened our event by using bio-degradable plates and cutlery to reduce our environmental impact. As a result we had less than a bag of garbage for the entire evening!
